PEAKS MILL ROAD
This delightful watercolor exhibits Sawyier's wonderful use of color in the fall of the year. The scene shows the country road that Sawyier most likely used on his way to the ElkhornCreek for a nice day of fishing.
Sawyier favored fishing the Elkhorn around the small community of Peaks Mill. Apparently, one of his favorite fishing spots was near the Dr. Suter home, which he included in many originals. It is now the home of The Ed Councill family, who own and operate Canoe Kentucky.
This painting was left to a relative in California, originally from Kentucky. Her grandfather was a Judge in Illinois. On the back of the painting is a lady's name and Covington, Kentucky. Her husband was a Court Clerk in the County. The connection to the Judge is yet to be established.
Based on Sawyier's Kentucky era signature, this work would have been created over 100 years ago.
